Forest Slumberjacks hate forest fires. When the summer is hot and dry and rainless, resinous trees become highly flammable. A single errant spark from a viking lighting their pipe, or not drenching the embers of their cooking fires can quickly spread, destroying entire swaths of forest. For all the Dragons hiding in those forests, an event like this is a tremendous disaster. The Forest Slumberjacks are so protective of their forest groves, they have evolved to become nature’s firefighters. The moment a fire starts to spread near their homes, they sniff it out with their powerful noses, and immediately leap into action. With razor sharp wing tips, they cut down a line of trees between the fire and their homes. They use their fiery breath for controlled burns to create fire breaks. Then, as the forest fire moves towards them, it will stop dead at the fire break for lack of fuel, and the Forest Slumberjacks’ homes will be saved. As a result of watching Forest Slumberjacks in action, intelligent viking communities have started cutting fire breaks around their villages to protect against similar dangers.
